Top 28 Of 2012

I was going to wait until the next episode came out to release this, but here it is anyway.

It’s no small statement that I make when I say that 2012 was a truly impeccable year for music. The independent spirit is making a large stretch into the mainstream media. The DIY bands are demonstrating long strides and making headway into the cultural congregation of the “hip”. Just as the fray and fringe, just outside the peripheral of that same cultural eye, becomes new territory to conquer and exploit. And that’s not a bad thing.

With that being said, in this years list I did away with the big names. The Bruce Springsteen’s and the Jack White’s of the music industry don’t belong on this list. They have their names in the proper spotlights of Rolling Stone and Spin magazines.

This list is The Americana Rock Mix’s representation of the aforementioned fringe and fray. The bands that caught my ear and kept tugging on my earlobes throughout 2012.

I had set a few guidelines for myself:

1. No “Greatest Hits” or “Collections”.
2. No “Live Albums” (as they typically become one of the above).
3. Must be a minimum of 7 songs OR 30 Minutes long. Just to keep it fair with the full length albums (typically 10 songs or 45+ minutes).

#3 put me in a hard position that I tried to tackle in Episode 168. If you enjoy the episodes where I drive myself crazy, give it a listen.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to it. Listed in alphabetical order.

American Aquarium – “Burn.Flicker.Die

Top 23 Albums of 2010

First, the explaination: I had to apply some rules to keep this list as “fair” as possible.

– No EP’s. As I said before, I am looking for quality AND quantity. And obviously more quantity makes room for more quality. So, I apologize to those who only released EP’s this year.

– Why 23 albums? Susan Bauer Lee (of Tim Lee 3) and I had a small facebook posting “conversation” about the fact that EVERYONE has a TOP 10 or 20 or 30 list. Why not go with an odd number? And I didn’t want to go as high as 30, so 23 seems like a fair number.

– I’m not numbering them. This is a Top 23 LIST. Not a countdown. So, they are listed alphabetically.

The list:

30dB
One Man Show

6 Day Bender
E’ville Fuzz

Band Of Horses
Infinite Arms

Doc Daily & The Magnolia Devil
Victims, Enemies & Old Friends

Glossary
Feral Fire

Harvest Kings
Cardboard Crows

Mat D.
Plank Road Drag

Mic Harrison And The High Score
Great Commotion

Michael Quinn and the Bourbon Kings
Whiskey Rebellion

Motel Drive
Motel Drive

Mumford & Sons
Sigh No More

Robert Plant
Band Of Joy

Sidewalk Dave
Gold Liquid Mischief

The Avett Brothers
I And Love And You

The Famous
Come Home To Me

The Gaslight Anthem
American Slang

The Kerosene Kondors
Sixteen Seasons

The Worrymen
The Worrymen

Tim Barry
28th & Stonewall

Tim Lee 3
Raucous Americanus

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Damn The Torpedoes (Deluxe Edition)
(Yeah, it’s a re-issue, but it came out in 2010, deal with it.)

Truckstop Darlin’
Truckstop Darlin’

– Two Cow Garage
Sweet Saint Me

So, there you have it. Like other lists that I have done in the past, I am expecting some of the unprofessional indie bands who didn’t make the list to contact me and complain. My e-mail is Von@AmericanaRoots.com

Take care. I’ll talk to you all on Thursday with a new episode of The Americana Rock Mix. It’s a Christmas edition.
